Agency employment 'boosts youth mobility'

24 November 2010
Working through an agency can improve labor mobility for young people, it is claimed.

A new report by the European Confederation of Private Employment Agencies (Eurociett) suggests temporary jobs may assist such individuals in entering and progressing in their careers.

Released to mark the European Union's Job Mobility Day, the study highlights the role of agency work in the labor market, noting 59 per cent of people in the sector are under the age of 30.

"For many of them, our industry is their first experience of the workplace," Eurociett managing director Denis Pennel said, adding temporary roles can assist in the transition from unemployment or education into permanent positions.

By matching supply with demand, the agency industry is close to the workplace and can respond to changes in labor markets across Europe, boosting participation and providing individuals with access to vocational training.

Countries found to have the highest level of support for temporary work as a good way of making the transition into employment were the UK and Belgium.

Eurociett represents 27 national organizations with Europe, in addition to international staffing businesses such as Randstad.
