Americans 'can succeed overseas later than Europeans'

19 May 2011
Workers from the US can spend more time employed in their own country before taking up posts overseas, it has been claimed.

An expert has declared expatriate careers in both places differ, with Americans more likely to progress professionally abroad at a later age than Europeans.

President of the Net Expat Group Alain Verstandig claimed the US approach to international roles is "transactional" as opposed to the "more strategic view" adopted in Europe, Recruiter reports.

The labor migration specialist stated: "To grow as a talent in Europe, you must move abroad."

He added that moves between different states within the US are also easier for employees than those from one European nation to another, as "Americans see each state as still under the US umbrella".

Addressing the European Totally Expat Show in London, Mr Verstandig suggested barriers are still perceived as existing to European job moves.

A recent poll for the 2011 European Youth Week discovered 53 per cent of young people in the region are willing to seek employment overseas.
