Austria praised for "impressive" post-recession jobs performance

11 July 2011
The "impressive" performance of the Austrian labor market has been praised in a new report that examines ways to boost employment in the nation further.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) study, the export-led recovery should be built on to enhance domestic means of generating money and jobs.

The OECD's Economic Survey of Austria also recommended strengthening reforms in the nation in order to drive further growth, enhancing public sector efficiency, reforming the healthcare sector and shifting the burden of tax to property from companies and employees.

Commenting on the publication during a visit to Vienna, OECD secretary-general Angel Gurria stated Austria is a leading OECD economy in part because of the social partnership between businesses and trade unions.

According to the Paris-based organization, more jobs need to be created for low-skilled workers, which could be done by subsidizing recruitment.

Recent projections from Statistics Austria indicated the country's labor force is expected to expand over the coming years.
