Boris Johnson heaps praise on Tech City

15 November 2011
Thousands of IT jobs in the UK have been created in London's Tech City, with mayor Boris Johnson praising the development for the economic impact it has had in its first year of existence.

The district, which stretches from Shoreditch to the Olympic Stadium, has attracted more than 600 companies since November 2010, leading to the creation of 1,000 high-tech roles in the process.

It has seen London become the leading digital city in Europe, attracting highly-skilled candidates to fill IT jobs and other positions.

In addition, 1,300 apprenticeship opportunities have emerged in the last 12 months.

Mr Johnson said: "London is leading the charge on Europe's digital boom. Across the capital hundreds of new technology businesses have emerged with an exciting cluster bursting into life in Tech City."

According to a report from the Confederation of British Industry and Harvey Nash, the number of permanent jobs in the UK increased in August and September despite a number of challenges facing businesses.
