Call for action over UK employment laws

03 October 2011
Manufacturers in the UK have called on the government to tackle issues with the country's employment law.

EEF the manufacturer's organisation recently petitioned policymakers to take a look at proposed regulations and resist those being introduced by Europe as part of its Red Tape Challenge.

The group made particular note of the Agency Workers Directive, which has seen the cost of employing such staff rise by around 20 per cent.

Commenting on the situation, director of policy at the EEF Steve Radley called on the coalition to start "delivering results".

"In the coming months industry will be looking for hard evidence that the government is blocking new regulation from Brussels and is taking steps to reduce regulation at home," he said.

Earlier in the week, it was claimed that motor company Ford is planning to create around 10,000 employment opportunities in the US through the relocation of a plant in Mexico to the country and other steps, Bloomberg reported.
