Concerns over oil and gas skills shortages

25 November 2010
The oil and gas industry could experience skills shortages in the future, a new survey indicates.

Potential talent gaps in the sector are a concern for professionals in the field, a poll by Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce reported by Oil Voice suggests.

According to the study, business confidence in energy markets is increasing and the industry is expected to return to growth, increasing demand for workers in the field.

Sponsored by McGrigors, the research by the Fraser of Allander Institute found that oil and gas operators and contractors are worried about being able to recruit those with engineering and other specialist skills, with leaving to join competitors the most common reason for firms to lose members of staff.

McGrigors head of energy Bob Ruddiman said: "This rise in optimism has, however, once again unearthed an increasing demand in the retention of and potential shortages of highly skilled and experienced engineering staff."

In related news, the Northern Echo recently reported an estimated 1,000 new positions will be created after Offshore Group Newcastle signed a deal with Apache Corporation in the US to construct an oil platform in the North Sea.
