Construction skills 'will be needed for Japanese rebuilding'

18 March 2011
The reconstruction efforts in Japan will require skilled construction workers, as the country recovers from the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami earlier this month.

An analysis of the situation in the Asian nation by Reuters suggests it will take at least five years for the country to rebuild in the affected areas, with the total bill put as high as $180 billion.

Infrastructure correspondent Greg Roumeliotis notes experienced professionals in the construction and engineering fields will be required as power grids, ports, rail networks, homes and roads need to be replaced.

In addition, jobs may also be created as detailed planning is required to protect infrastructure from any future disasters.

Currently the third largest construction sector in the world, he states: "Japan has the resources, skills and social cohesiveness required to rebuild quickly."

The 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Honshu shook Japan and caused a tsunami that swept across the coast, causing widespread destruction.
