Demand for skilled oil and gas engineers 'rising'

25 February 2011
The need for companies to appoint skilled engineers in the oil and gas sector is expanding, it is claimed.

According to SJD Accountancy, the UK sector is anticipated to experience a "strong recovery" curve during the coming years, following the global economic downturn, with talent shortages emerging in the industry as a result.

The company notes that forecasts from the US Energy Information Administration suggest crude oil will increase to $350 per barrel by 2020 as the sector struggles to keep up with rising demand.

The company notes daily rates for oil and gas engineers climbed by 30 per cent in 2010, as rapid growth in emerging economies such as India and China boosted sales of the commodities and investment increased.

Full time and temporary jobs for engineers in areas such as the Middle East and the North Sea have risen, with the latter expected to generate 15,000 new roles for engineers during the next five years through the development of new fields.

Meanwhile, trade association Oil & Gas UK has predicted rising capital investment in oil and gas during 2011, with thousands of jobs opening up in the country this year.
