Dip in joblessness across OECD area

16 June 2011
Global unemployment figures have suggested it is falling in many countries around the world.

The latest report on joblessness by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) revealed there was a 0.1 point decline in the overall number of people out of work to 8.1 per cent between March and April 2011.

According to the Paris-based agency, unemployment had previously remained stable for two months, with most OECD nations now demonstrating a declining pattern for the first time since the international economic downturn.

Over the month in question, only the US, Luxembourg, Japan, Mexico and Slovenia saw a climb in the numbers of individuals out of work.

The figures showed there was a year-on-year fall in unemployment of 3.1 million people in April 2011.

Within the euro area, the OECD placed unemployment at 9.9 per cent in April, the same rate as the previous month.

Recent data published by the European Union statistical office Eurostat indicated joblessness had fallen on a seasonally-adjusted basis in euro states from 10.2 per cent in April 2010.
