EU approves aid for redundant staff

15 December 2010
A series of grants have been approved by the European Parliament to European Union (EU) nations in order to assist redundant workers in finding jobs.

The funding includes €2,247,940 to provide help for 2,554 individuals in Slovenia who lost their posts at the Mura European Fashion Design (clothing) company.

All the resources were applied for under the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), with a total of eight aid packages agreed by the European Parliament.

The other nations whose former workers will benefit from the latest round of grants are Germany, Poland and Spain.

Unemployed people who will be assisted by the funding include ex-printing sector staff in Germany, textile, construction, manufacturing and retail professionals in Spain and marine engine makers in Poland.

The EGF is created to help individuals affected by the impact on world trade patterns of globalization or the economic downturn, with initiatives such as occupational guidance, re-training and entrepreneurship promotion funded by the scheme.
