EU forum considers labor migration issues

15 December 2010
A European Union (EU) meeting held earlier this month has examined labor migration issues in the region.

Hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the event looked at a range of professional and grass roots views on the issue, with more than a hundred individuals in attendance.

The fourth gathering of the European Integration Forum dialogue platform, it involved the exchange of best practice on how to integrate immigrants into populations.

"Among all the talk about integration targets and quotas, we must not forget about human rights, which are universal and are central to any concept of integration," the Ghanaian-born mayor of Piran, Slovenia, Peter Bossman, said.

Delegates focused on ways to ensure migrants are active participants in civic life in their host countries and the political and social systems there.

The EESC is an EU consultative body that works to improve integration across the region and strengthen the operations of civil society organizations.
