EU Parliament adopts new part-time and contract staff resolution

08 July 2010
Labor law reform should focus on ensuring that those working in part-time positions and on temporary contracts are better protected.

This is according to a new resolution adopted by the European Union (EU) Parliament, which advocates equal rights for contract staff and those in "non-standard" employment.

According to the proposals adopted by MEPs on July 6th, it should also be made easier for people to "move between various types of work" and joblessness.

"Most jobs should be based on indefinite contracts and national governments should implement flexicurity in a fairer and more balanced way," a statement from the Parliament read.

Both national governments and the EU Commission have been urged in the resolution to ensure the balance of rights for employees designated "outsiders" and "insiders" in terms of their contracts.

The European Confederation of Private Employment Agencies, known as Eurociett, recently unveiled a list of recommendations intended to ensure labor markets within the EU operate more effectively, including suggestions relating to contract workers.
