EU report calls for action on youth unemployment

29 November 2010
More needs to done to ensure young people within the European Union (EU) are able to find work, a new report declares.

The study highlights the need to remove obstacles for candidates entering the labor market and improve access to positions, with 15 to 24-year-olds experiencing a disproportionate amount of the impact of the financial crisis.

Entitled Employment in Europe 2010, the report claims joblessness among this age group has reached more than 30 per cent in some EU nations and although signs of an upturn are being seen, it still remains a problem.

The research suggests as economic recovery remains fragile, measures are needed to boost youth unemployment, speed up job creation and ensure workers are paid well for temporary jobs in order to improve productivity.

"We are working with all our partners, including Member States, to ensure that people have the right skills for the jobs of tomorrow," EU commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion Laszlo Andor stated.

In related news, the EU is marking the two-year anniversary of the Small Business Act this December with a seminar to examine the benefits and employment it has provided.
