EU rules could see temporary staff lose jobs

10 January 2012
New EU directives which came into play in 2011 could see temporary staff lose their jobs as opposed to being treated better.

In October, the new rules came into effect, meaning that those who work for a company on a temporary basis, but for longer than a 12 week period, would need to be paid the same amount of money as permanent staff.

Temporary staff would also be given statutory sick pay and maternity leave after working the 12 week period.

However, there are fears that, as the first 12 weeks since the changes come to an end, that companies may fire those who are nearing 12 weeks before hiring new staff to start the period over.

Association of Professional Staffing Companies conducted a survey which found that 29 per cent of companies plan to reduce numbers to avoid these new rules, according to the Daily Mail.
It said that tens of thousands could be affected by these moves.
