EU unveils plans to address skills gaps and job shortages

25 November 2010
A new strategy aimed at addressing potential problems with skills shortages in the future has been unveiled by the European Union (EU).

The document also sets out proposed efforts to combat unemployment in the continent, with an estimated ten per cent of the active population (23 million individuals) currently out of work.

Under the EU plans, attempts will be made to enhance the employability of Europeans and increase the number of people in jobs by upgrading skills and matching them to areas of need in the market.

The European Commission has launched its Agenda for Skills and Jobs, having predicted the IT and health industries in particular will suffer talent shortages over the coming years, with a deficit of 700,000 technology specialists anticipated by 2015.

EU commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion Laszlo Andor stated: "The crisis has wiped out any past progress so we urgently need to reform labor markets, make sure skills are in line with demand and working conditions are right for job creation."

An estimated 5.6 million roles have been lost across Europe since the current downturn began in 2008.
