Euro area joblessness remains stable in June

Data for June 2011 has revealed that unemployment across the countries that have adopted the euro held steady at 9.9 per cent in June 2011.

During the same month, the total European Union (EU) region saw no change in joblessness, with the rate remaining at 9.4 per cent.

According to the latest report from statistics agency Eurostat, seasonally-adjusted unemployment stood at 22.473 million people in the EU27 and 15.640 in the euro area, a fall of 38,000 in the former, but a climb of 18,000 in the latter from May.

Year-on-year, there has been a 706,000 drop in those out of work across the EU and 346,000 within nations with the single currency.

Lowest rates of joblessness for June 2011 were found in Austria, with a rate of four per cent, followed by the Netherlands (4.1 per cent) and Luxembourg (4.5 per cent).

Figures published by Eurostat for May 2011 showed no change in unemployment from April, with 4.2 per cent of people in the Netherlands out of work and 4.3 per cent in Austria.
