Euro employment fortunes split at the end of 2011

01 February 2012
The number of people finding jobs across Europe at the end of 2011 found differing fortunes depending on what country they were in, according to latest figures.

Eurostat has released its latest report on European employment, in which it found that some countries are experiencing good growth, but others are shrinking.

Germany posted a dropping unemployment figure of 5.5 per cent in December, which it said earlier this week was its lowest since the reunification of the county in 1990. Meanwhile, the Netherlands and Austria posted falls to 4.9 and 4.2 per cent respectively.

On the other hand, Spain continued to see doom and gloom, with the unemployment figure in December sitting steady at a huge 22.9 per cent.

For Europe as a whole, the unemployment figure for December 2011 sat at 10.4 per cent. This was the same figure as in November, and was only slightly higher than the flat ten per cent seen a year earlier.
