Europe minister encourages careers in EU civil service

16 February 2011
Interest in positions within the European Union (EU) civil service could increase this year, after politicians speak at the University of Cardiff to encourage sign-up in certain jobs.

As part of EU Careers Month, minister for Europe David Lidington and secretary of state for Wales Cheryl Gillan will hold a discourse at the college, explaining what it is like to work in Brussels and why the UK government is so keen to recruit both British students and professionals.

A new website has also been launched, featuring videos, case studies, top tips, blogs and other useful information pertaining to life working for the EU civil service.

Mr Lidington remarked: "The EU needs outstanding generalist civil servants from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, as well as specialists such as lawyers, economists, auditors, interpreters and statisticians."

EU Careers Month was launched on February 7th, following a recent survey from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office revealing that undergraduates do not know enough about employment opportunities within this division.
