Europe seeing a skills shortage
28 December 2011
Return to index
The unemployment rate across Europe can be attributed to poor levels of education and a skills shortage, according to a new survey.
In the survey published by Gallup, and conducted across the continent between 2009 and 2011, it was reported that debt ridden countries such as Greece and Italy were seeing poor employment levels because people were not prepared for work.
It was reported that those in the south of Europe who have only a primary or secondary education are twice as likely to be unemployed, while those who have further or higher education (college and university) see unemployment levels of just five per cent.
Some countries across Europe are addressing these problems, with Scotland for example, announcing last week that firms would receive part of a new £150,000 fund if they employ and provide specialist training for young people.
Gallup said that the problem for those with lower education levels is that jobs requiring their skills are often outsourced to cheaper labor markets such as China.
