European Commission presents vocational training plans

12 June 2010
New proposals intended to increase uptake of vocational education and training within the European Union (EU) have been released.

The European Commission revealed such courses are chosen by 50 per cent of all EU students in upper secondary education and provide skills aimed at helping participants to find employment in the future.

According to the Brussels-based executive, more young people should be encouraged to complete vocational education, with training quality improved and modernized to meet the needs of the current generation and ensure they can find jobs.

The commission also wants to increase labor migration by making it easier for those with skills to move between positions and countries.

"It's more important than ever that we pool our efforts and make it a more attractive option for apprentices, students and anybody else who wants to upgrade their skills," EU commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism and youth Androulla Vassiliou stated.

In the UK, the Heritage Lottery Fund has announced it is investing £17 million in creating a series of 808 working placements across the country, each of which is intended to generate jobs and provide skills training.
