European meeting focuses on job creation

12 July 2010
A meeting of European ministers has been held in Brussels that concentrated on issues relating to employment and growth.

During a working lunch the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, highlighted the importance of economic governance, while politicians in attendance stated that job creation should be at the heart of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

Mr Van Rompuy also stressed that only employment growth is capable of leading the region out of the downturn and ensuring its future competitiveness.

The Informal Council of European Employment and Social Affairs Ministers also examined new strategies aimed at tackling joblessness and other challenges in the field after the meal.

Topics included increasing labor market participation and issues relating to green positions and the growing low-carbon sector.

In related news, a recent resolution regarding part-time and contract staff was adopted by the European Parliament in order to increase protection for workers and permit people to move between roles more easily.
