Europeans 'not concerned' about ageing population

16 January 2012
Nearly four in ten people are not concerned that Europe's population is ageing, according to a new study.

The Eurobarometer, published by the European Commission, showed that many are prepared for growing old while remaining active.

Over 60 per cent said that workers should be allowed to stay in employment after retirement age, while a third said that they are hoping to keep their job for longer.

"Today's Eurobarometer survey shows that people are ready to remain active as they grow older. I am confident that the European year will act as a catalyst to mobilise citizens, stakeholders and decision-makers to take action to promote active ageing and to tackle the challenges of ageing in a positive way," said commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion Lazlo Andor.

Recently, a UK government report revealed that age-related discrimination and stereotyping was "firmly embedded" in society and is a problem which is in need of tackling.
