Germany 'seeks additional workers from eurozone'

20 July 2011
Those nations within the eurozone that are currently experiencing economic difficulties are the focus of recruitment efforts from Germany.

According to reports in the press, the country is seeking skilled workers from other nations that have adopted the euro such as Spain and Greece in order to address talent gaps it is witnessing in some sectors.

The federal employment agency has revealed the labor migration strategy is aimed at attracting professionals from beleagured states to Germany.

Reuters stated that industry organizations have pinpointed a 5,000 shortage of hospital doctors and a 36,000 shortfall in the number of engineers required by German employers.

Spokeswoman for the federal office Beate Raabe told the news source: "We are seeing a high level of interest in Spain. Unemployment is high there and we're exploring the possibility of some seeking work in Germany."

Official jobs figures from Germany have indicated that a climb in atypical employment to 7.84 million during 2010 was driven by growth in the temporary labor market.
