Growing Indian car sales may boost automotive jobs

13 September 2010
A sharp rise in car sales in India could generate new positions in the manufacturing sector.

Data compiled by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers shows that purchases grew between April and August 2010 by 32.38 per cent year-on-year, which could bolster automotive employment in the country.

The industry produced 7.063 million vehicles during the period in question, with passenger car sales up by 34.32 per cent, utility vehicles by 22.56 per cent and multi-purpose models by 50.68 per cent over 2009.

Overall automobile exports grew during April to August by 48.42 per cent, while domestic purchases were also higher over the year.

Research by Bloomberg showed that domestic vehicle sales in India have risen for 19 consecutive periods, as the industry continues to expand.

The passenger car figures also show that demand was fuelled by Nissan Motor and Volkswagen launching new models, with domestic registrations increasing to 160,794 units.
