ILO chief praises global focus on jobs and social protection

08 November 2011
The director-general of the International Labour Organization has welcomed an international commitment to boosting employment, social protection and economic growth.

Juan Somavia commented that the G20 Summit of world leaders in Cannes had seen a shift back to looking at these areas that is needed in the current climate.

He noted that a new Task Force on Employment was established at the meeting that will initially look at problems facing young jobseekers and will be convened under the Mexican G20 presidency.

"G20 Leaders are connecting their macroeconomic agenda to policies for decent work, a better start in working life for young women and men, and social protection floors to prevent extreme poverty," stated Mr Somavia.

In an analysis published ahead of the Cannes G20 Summit, the ILO warned that the jobs recession could worsen and lead to further unrest in some nations unless action is taken by leaders to address the problem.
