ILO issues call for action to avert further jobs recession

01 November 2011
The International Labour Organization (ILO) has issued a warning that more needs to be done as the world teeters on the brink of a possible new jobs recession.

According to the global body, a new and deeper dip in the generation of employment opportunities could take place in many countries unless nations take action to combat it.

Director of the ILO's International Institute for Labour Studies Raymond Torres warned: "We have reached the moment of truth. We have a brief window of opportunity to avoid a major double-dip in employment."

A study, published by the institution, cautioned that sluggish economic growth is hampering recruitment and action is needed to return levels of those in work to pre-crisis rates, with 80 million paid roles needed over the coming two years to achieve this.

Entitled the World of Work Report 2011: Making markets work for jobs, it noted the risk of social unrest is increasing in more than 45 and 119 nations analyzed, particularly those within the Arab region and the European Union.

With France currently chairing the Group of Twenty (G20) industrialized nations, a meeting is being held in Cannes this week of leaders from member states.
