ILO issues warning about youth unemployment problem

21 October 2011
The International Labor Organization (ILO) has issued a warning about the problem of youth unemployment, claiming a whole generation has been "scarred" by the lack of work available in today's climate.

According to the body's Global Employment Trends for Youth: 2011 Update report, the number of young people without work is expected to fall to a worldwide figure of 74.6 million by the time 2011 draws to a close, representing 12.6 per cent of the globe's population.

Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, executive director of the ILO Employment Sector, said: "Governments are struggling to find innovative solutions through labor market interventions such as addressing skills mismatches, job search support, entrepreneurship training, subsidies to hiring, etc."

The report suggested not only not only will young people attempting to find work in the wake of the worldwide economic downturn suffer from "social hazards" associated with unemployment, but they could also develop a long-term distrust of the economic and political system in their nation.
