IMF head highlights need to create jobs
16 April 2011
Return to index
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has made calls for the number of people in employment to increase in order to facilitate global economic recovery.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the IMF, spoke on April 13th of the need for a reduction in unemployment and inequality, as the two issues can undermine attempts to build a stable economy.
With more than 200 million people currently out of work around the globe, Mr Strauss-Khan also highlighted how young people are being disproportionately affected by the economic downturn.
He cautioned that there is currently the risk of creating a "lost generation" of people who are struggling to get into work.
"Ultimately, employment and equity are building blocks of economic stability and prosperity, of political stability and peace," Mr Strauss-Khan added.
The IMF also recently issued its Global Financial Stability Report, with Jose Vinals, financial counsellor and director of the monetary and capital markets department, noting that there are still underlying financial vulnerabilities that need to be addressed in the areas.
