Improvement in quality of Canadian jobs

10 May 2011
The quality of jobs being created in Canada is improving, a new report has declared.

Published by bank CIBC, the study indicates better roles are emerging as the economy recovers and employment numbers rise, according to the Toronto Star.

The latest labor quality index from the institution shows 60 per cent of new roles created during the past year were designated as quality, high-paying positions.

According to CIBC, the employment quality index has climbed by 2.7 per cent in the past 12 months, with rises in paid and full-time work.

Sectors that have particularly provided new jobs in the last year include financial services, manufacturing, public service and construction.

Economist Benjamin Tal told the news source: "This is a much better performance than a similar measure in the US, where the quality of employment index continues to soften despite some improvement in the pace of job creation."

Statistics Canada recently announced that there was a 58,000 climb in employment during April this year, with many new roles part-time.
