Increase in UK manufacturing sector pay

19 August 2011
Pay for individuals working in the UK's manufacturing industry rose over the three months to July 2011 to 2.7 per cent.

This is according to figures published by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, which has announced that settlements are currently around "normal historical levels" over the long term.

The wages survey for the quarter revealed a 0.2 points rise in average increases from 2.5 per cent during the three months to the end of June.

EEF chief economist Lee Hopley explained that although a small expansion of settlement rates was seen, it remains within the normal range and pay freezes in some organisations are continuing.

"All parties are still having to face up to uncertain economic conditions and competitive pressures," she explained.

Those seeking manufacturing and engineering jobs in the UK may also be interested in comments by the Confederation of British Industry that although a recent increase in unemployment is a cause for concern, last year still saw more than 500,000 net new paid roles generated by firms in the private sector.
