India forecast to create 1m green jobs

18 August 2010
During the next two years, India is expected to generate one million new green employment opportunities, it has been predicted.

Headhunters estimate that the country's eco-friendly industry will see hundreds and thousands of jobs open up, the Economic Times reports.

Director and president of Ma Foi Randstad E Balaji told the news source that green positions are "opening up across sectors and some companies are even hiring chief sustainability officers".

The article quotes a United Nations Environment Programme report indicating that the biogas market will expand rapidly between now and 2025, while roles will also be available in engineering, architecture, environmental management and biotechnology.

An agreement was signed in March 2009 to establish a course in renewable energy engineering and management at TERI University, an institution that has seen its student body rise sharply since 2006.

India's expanding population is estimated at around 1.2 billion and the economy has a broad agricultural and industrial base.
