Indian army employment scheme trains 5k

26 September 2011
An initiative operating in the Jammu region of India has seen the military train young individuals for future employment.

Under the scheme, around 5,000 people have had their career prospects improved through training and guidance, with the project focusing on remote areas and those with terrorism problems.

According to the Indo-Asian News Service, the Operation Sadbhavana Youth Employment and Guidance Node (YEGN) has seen 100 participants to date find work, while many others have gone down the self-employment route after taking part in the program.

Brigadier JS Cheema of 16 Corps told the news source that new features are being added to the scheme, with help provided including interview guidance, assistance in filling in forms, provision of study material and counseling, as well as skills training.

"Over 50 youth trained in these camps have got jobs in the state police and more than 300 have cleared their physicals for Army recruitment," he added.

Recent figures from Ma Foi Randstad showed India has a growing part-time employment market, with sectors such as healthcare, hospitality and retail seeing particular growth in such workers.
