Industrial jobs policy opinions approved by EESC

14 May 2011
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has approved a series of opinions that include provisions to boost industrial jobs.

At a plenary session, the measures are intended to safeguard and create new employment opportunities within the field, as well as improving competitiveness and maintaining the position of Europe as a global industrial leader.

A total of four opinions won the committee's backing, each of which targets a specific objective relating to boosting European industry and enhancing the sector's prosperity.

Included in the provisions is a special consideration for small and medium-sized enterprises in the region, with a road map proposed to support innovation and enterprise as a means to fuel economic recovery and generate employment.

Put forward by individuals from interest groups in Italy and the Netherlands, the opinions also stress the need for greater co-ordination between the European Union (EU) and member states regarding resource efficiency and knowledge chains.

A total of more than €20.4 million was recently allocated by the EU Globalisation Fund to Denmark in order to assist 1,775 workers who have lost their jobs in the shipbuilding and wind turbines industries to find new employment.
