Ireland reports decline in joblessness

02 December 2010
In spite of current problems being experienced by the Irish economy, the nation saw unemployment fall in November 2010 compared with the previous month.

This is according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), which reported the live register of people out of work dropped by 4,200 to 425,002 from October.

However, the index has climbed by 11,497, or 2.8 per cent, over the 12 months to November 2010 on an unadjusted basis.

This is lower than the 4.2 per cent year-on-year rise reported for October 2010, with an annual rise of 17,146 seen.

During November this year, the seasonally-adjusted jobless rate for the country dipped by one percentage point from October, falling from 13.6 per cent to 13.5 per cent.

The fall in unemployment in Ireland comes despite the country having to apply to the European Union and the International Monetary Fund for a €67.5 billion bailout of its economy, as it continues to struggle to recover from the impact of the global downturn.
