Ireland reports Q2 decline in job losses

17 September 2011
The fall in the number of people in work in Ireland during the second quarter of 2011 was less than over the previous three months, according to new data.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office revealed that year-on-year employment was down by two per cent during the second quarter of the year, with 37,800 fewer people in work.

However, more than 1.82 million people in Ireland were in paid roles over the period in question, as the annual decline in jobs fell from 2.9 per cent over the first quarter of the year.

As the country continues to feel the effects of government austerity measures and the recession, Ireland saw a seasonally-adjusted fall in positions of 0.2 per cent over the three months to June, down from a quarterly drop of 0.4 per cent in the first period of the year.

The Restaurants Association of Ireland recently reported that almost 500 permanent paid roles have been generated by the sector in the past two months, according to a poll carried out by the group of 148 establishments in the country.
