Irish employment 'increases in August'

23 September 2010
Total employment in Ireland rose during August 2010 by 452,500, new figures show.

Ireland's Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveals that the live register increased during the month by 2,500 from July to a seasonally-adjusted 455,000 last month.

The live register, which includes those in part-time, seasonal and casual positions, rose year-on-year in August by 6.9 per cent, or 30,198, compared with eight per cent during the 12-month period to July 2010.

August saw 700 male workers secure employment and 1,900 women, with an average weekly increase in jobs of 625 for August, down from 1,700 in July.

The standardized unemployment rate has increased from 12.9 per cent during the first quarter of 2010 to 13.8 per cent last month.

However, these figures include seasonal, part-time and casual employees entitled to jobseekers benefits or allowances and there were 277,400 individuals out of work according to the quarterly national household survey for January to March 2010.

The Irish Independent reports that the number of people in long-term unemployment is rising, with young men in particular finding it hard to obtain positions and 293,600 individuals out of work during the second quarter of the year.
