Irish MEP welcomes EU action on youth joblessness

22 August 2011
A member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Ireland has praised efforts being made in the region to tackle the problem of youth unemployment.

Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser, Jim Higgins, who represents the north-west of the country, stated that the European Union (EU) has made progress in this area in line with the Europe 2020 jobs strategy.

However, he added that more results are needed and examples of good practice should be rolled out across member states in order to boost the youth labor market.

Pointing to the EU program on employment and social solidarity, which is focusing on this, the politician predicted it will examine schemes such as the National Internship initiative in Ireland and will be used to inform future policy.

"Most of our young people wish to work and live at home but, due to a lack of opportunity, are forced to leave for the jobs market in Canada or Australia," he warned.

Unemployment among young people under 25 in the EU during June 2011 stood at 20.5 per cent, down from 21 per cent for the same month of 2010.
