Irish redundancy slowdown 'indicates recovery'

09 August 2010
A slowdown in the number of redundancies taking place in Ireland suggests the country is recovering from the recession.

This is the view expressed by the country's minister for enterprise, trade and innovation, who claimed that July saw a lower rate of positions being axed than any month in 2009 except December, while the number of redundancies in 2010 has fallen by 20 per cent to 39,105 compared with the first seven months of last year.

Batt O'Keeffe stated: "Behind every job loss statistic is a human story and we must continue to tackle unemployment with a range of policy measures that effect economic recovery."

He explained that he is now working to ensure that the more than 64,000 part-time employees in Ireland have the option to work full-time and greater spending is planned in public infrastructure projects.

In order to further boost job creation in the country, a series of regional meetings between government ministers, organizations, farmers and business owners have been taking place in order to improve credit to enterprises.
