Jobs created in BC by Canadian action plan

19 March 2011
The Canadian Economic Action Plan has generated new employment in British Columbia (BC), it is revealed.

Figures from the region show that social housing has also been enhanced after more than $8.7 million was allocated to 29 co-operatives in the region.

President of the Treasury Board and minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway Stockwell Day made the announcement during a visit to the Hoy Creek Housing Co-operative.

"Our government is focused on the economy and creating jobs and growth for families," he declared.

The $1 billion social housing renovation and retrofit scheme, unveiled in the Economic Action Plan, is expected to generate construction and other employment opportunities across the country.

Under the strategy, funding has also been set aside to create jobs, stimulate the building industry and improve energy efficiency.

The number of jobs in Canada rose by 15,000 during February 2011 and unemployment remained stable over the month at 7.8 per cent, official data show.
