MEPs call for European strategy on green employment

09 September 2010
A strategy for the creation of green jobs in the European Union (EU) should be drawn up, according to politicians.

MEPs have declared that plans for employment in the low-carbon sector are needed by 2011.

MEP Elisabeth Schroedter drafted a resolution on the matter that has been passed by the European Parliament on the matter and notes that the EU 2020 strategy failed to examine ways in which sustainability can generate jobs.

It calls on the EU Commission to propose such a strategy by next year, in conjunction with related legislative and non-legislative measures that will encourage the creation of green roles and assist with the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Proposed measures include redeploying workers, providing aid for European industry to enhance its efficiency and developing national training and education systems.

External affairs spokesperson for the Renewable Energy Association Leonie Green recently pointed out that the rich resources Scotland has to offer the green power sector make it a fertile area for the creation of green jobs.
