New consultation stage on EU Working Time Directive launched

23 December 2010
A new stage of consultation has been launched by the European Union (EU) as part of its review of the Working Time Directive.

The statement from the European Commission in Brussels reveals the second stage of discussion is mandatory and will involve representatives of both workers and employers.

Major results from the first stage of consultation have been included and partners in the exercise are now being asked to consider the available options for review of the EU Working Time Directive.

In addition, a new legal implementation report has been released about the ways in which member states have put the legislation in place.

EU commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion Laszlo Andor commented: "The current situation is not sustainable politically or legally. We need a fresh start and a new EU-level approach to working time. It will not be easy."

The EU Working Time Directive is intended to protect the health and safety of workers in the region by providing a set of minimum rules for all member states.
