Obama: US needs to prepare workers for manufacturing roles

14 June 2011
The US president has stressed the need for better training and preparation for those individuals who will be required to work in the manufacturing industry.

Barack Obama announced that he is holding a meeting with his advisory Jobs Council this week in order to examine problems relating to employment.

However, speaking in his weekly radio address from Washington DC, he explained that there will not be a "quick fix" to the current economic difficulties facing the US.

The premier stated that he planned to use a visit to North Carolina on Monday (June 13th) to "talk about additional steps we can take to spur private-sector hiring in the short term and ensure our workers have the skills and training they need".

President Obama emphasized the growing partnership between the government and the private sector to enhance employability, with a new scheme involving the National Association of Manufacturers potentially providing training opportunities for 500,000 community college students.

During his trip to North Carolina, he toured a factory producing energy-efficient LED lighting technology in Durham for company Cree and stressed the need for more engineers in the country.
