OECD highlights need for policies to get people into work

26 April 2011
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has suggested that those being forced out of the labor market may need to be encouraged to return to work.

According to the group, people falling into unemployment for an extended period of time, or young people struggling to find their first role, may be easily tempted to give up trying to get a job.

"The risk is strongest for youth and low-skilled workers who have been disproportionately affected by the rise in unemployment," the OECD said.

Policies, such as boosting labor demand by reducing the costs faced by employers, could help in reducing the risk of disincentivizing potential workers from permanently withdrawing from the job market.

February recently saw a drop in the global unemployment rate from 8.3 per cent to 8.2 per cent, OECD figures showed, the fourth such decline in as many months.

The United States recorded an 8.8 per cent joblessness rate in the month.
