Older people 'should be viewed as asset to European labor force'

24 March 2011
Rather than being perceived as a burden to society in the European Union (EU), older people should be viewed as "an asset", it has been claimed.

The statement was made by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), which has highlighted the need to provide such individuals with incentives to work.

A hearing on "the role of family policy in demographic change" and best practice in this area has been held by the EESC, which will feed into a conference on demographic change taking place in Budapest later this month.

EESC president Staffan Nilsson stated in his opening address: "Europe must set an example in matters of intergenerational equity and solidarity and the problem of ageing population is both a challenge and an opportunity for Europe."

In addition, the meeting highlighted the need for adequate support for families across the EU, as failure to put these in place can push up costs in many areas.

EU commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion Laszlo Andor recently highlighted the importance of employers and workers being involved in shaping policies for recovery in the region during a speech in Brussels.
