Poland retail sales growth may provide new jobs

01 May 2011
Growing numbers of job opportunities could be created in Poland after it was revealed the country's retail sector expanded quicker than originally predicted by industry analysts.

According to figures from the Central Statistical Office, retail sales increased by 9.4 per cent year on year, considerably higher than the market consensus of 8.4 per cent.

Bloomberg noted sales rose by 18.8 per cent month on month.

In addition, the jobs market has improved in recent times, with the unemployment rate dropping from 13.2 per cent in February to 13.1 per cent the following month.

As reported by Warsaw Business Journal, Bank Zachodni WBK analysts reacted to the news by stating: "We expect that in the upcoming months the decline of unemployment will gain momentum, supported by increasing demand for work and the opening of the German labor market for Poles in May."

However, economist at the establishment Piotr Bielski told Bloomberg the higher retail sales could encourage the central bank's Monetary Policy Council to increase interest rates.

The organisation will meet to decide when to boost borrowing costs on May 10-11th, after raising the base rate to four per cent earlier in the month to try and curb inflation.
