Recruitment agencies contribute to domestic workers rules

23 June 2011
Negotiations regarding domestic workers rules have been attended by a delegation of recruitment industry professionals.

The International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies (Ciett) has revealed it has held talks at the 100th session of the International Labour Conference about decent conditions for such workers.

Taking place in Geneva this month, the event was attended by Ciett vice-president Fred van Haasteren and a number of other officials from the body, who discussed the text of the forthcoming convention on domestic workers.

Ciett has welcomed a revision of the plans to ensure they are consistent with the private employment agencies convention and text calling for members to promote good practices by such organizations.

Attendees at the International Labour Organization event voted in favour of the recommendations made regarding the proposed convention, which is intended to provide domestic workers with basic labor rights in line with those in other professions.

It is also committed to promoting "respect for fundamental principles and rights at work including freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining".

In related news, Ciett recently participated in a seminar about labor market needs held in Brussels by the International Organisation for Migration.
