Rise in Greek employment during October 2010

18 January 2011
Although the Greek economy is still struggling to recover from the impact of the financial crisis and the country's debt burden, employment rose slightly during October 2010.

This is according to new figures published by the Hellenic Statistical Authority, which show a climb in the number of people in jobs of 3,048 persons from September.

Joblessness rose between October 2009 and the same month of 2010 from 9.8 per cent to 13.5 per cent.

However, the trend may be easing as the Labor Force Survey for October 2010 showed a rise in employed persons of 0.1 per cent to 4,369,543, although the number of people out of work was 56,332, or nine per cent, higher over the month.

Last month, the agency reported the unemployment rate stood at 12.4 per cent during the third quarter of 2010, up from 11.8 per cent the previous three months, with employment falling over the period by 0.5 per cent.
