Rise in output may create European construction jobs

21 August 2010
The European Union (EU) saw construction sector production increase during June 2010 by 3.5 per cent.

Seasonally-adjusted figures for the industry indicate that the market returned to growth during the month, following a fall of 0.1 per cent in May.

Similarly, production in the eurozone construction sector expanded by 2.7 per cent in June having fallen by 0.7 per cent in May, according to data from Eurostat.

Year-on-year output was 5.4 per cent higher across the 27 EU nations and 3.1 per cent above June 2009's figure within nations that have adopted the euro.

Member states that saw the highest increases over the month in question were Romania (16.5 per cent), Spain (7.2 per cent) and Poland (4.5 per cent).

Those seeking construction jobs in Europe may be interested to note that growth was particularly strong in building construction, with a slower rate of expansion in civil engineering.

Eurostat figures for the second quarter of 2010 revealed a one per cent rise in gross domestic product in both the EU27 and euro areas.
