Romania records fall in unemployment
16 May 2010
Return to index
The jobless total in Romania has dipped during April this year by 0.3 percentage points.
Figures released by the nation's employment agency showed the proportion of people out of work fell from 8.4 per cent in March to 8.1 per cent.
The data from Bucharest shows the country's workforce appears to be recovering from the impact of the global economic downturn, as unemployment rose swiftly in the wake of the financial crisis.
According to Reuters, seasonal effects in the construction and agricultural sectors helped to boost employment, with an estimated 738,187 people in the country currently jobless, down from 765,285 in March.
Situated in southeastern central Europe, Romania covers almost 92,000 square miles and has a population of around 21.5 million people.
Romania received a 20 billion aid package in spring 2009 to assist its economy from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Union in exchange for an agreement to reduce public spending.
