Romanians 'looking overseas for work'

11 August 2010
More than 70,000 people from Romania have found employment in other countries, as individuals suggest that their opportunities elsewhere are better than at home.

This is according to a poll reported in national daily Financiarul which suggested that 51 per cent of respondents felt their chances to find work were better abroad and 28 per cent already knew someone in a job overseas.

An estimated 426,443 Romanians have applied for positions in other nations since the beginning of the year, Act Media claims, with 72,462 people accepting roles.

Countries that have witnessed high levels of labor migration from Romania include Germany and Greece, with key drivers for moving abroad including a better standard of living and improved working conditions.

The survey echoes recent comments made by Romanian president Traian Basescu who recently thanked economic migrants for working in other European Union nations rather than claiming unemployment benefits in their own country.
